GWEN HOSKER

Gwen Hosker is a recent graduate of Edinburgh College of Art whose work explores the contrast between old techniques and new technology. She uses natural materials such as bone and horn alongside precious metals to create unique pieces of stunning jewellery.

Artist's Statement

Both the aesthetic and social significance of the handwritten word inspire Gwen's work. Traditional hand skills, in particular quilting are also great sources of inspiration.Using found samples of handwriting dating back to 1910, Gwen is able to transfer their qualities on to new surfaces through laser etching. This technique offers a new way of marking the surface of natural materials. The burned mark also adds to the suggestion of permanence and questions traditional notions of preciousness.
